Development of the Best Model for Destination Management Organizations in the Republic of Armenia

This competition was announced within the framework of the Local Economy and Infrastructure Development (LEID) program.

The objective of this assignment is to identify the most effective destination management model and promote healthy competition among selected regional destinations in Armenia by evaluating their operational characteristics, content, and budget allocations. The findings will support the Tourism Committee of Armenia in enhancing and transferring its tourism policy and strategic planning.

Within the framework of this agreement, the Arpa Environmental Foundation, in collaboration with the Italian consulting company Ars Progetti, has developed
a recommended model for Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) in Armenia.

The work included the analysis and assessment of tourism development potential in six target destinations, resulting in the provision of a 3- to 10-year DMO model.

Additionally, destination management plans were developed for the following four specific sites:

  • Areni Community – known for its winemaking, as well as cultural and natural heritage;
  • Marmashen Monastic Complex – as a site of historical and cultural significance;
  • Symphony of Stones in Garni – as a natural heritage monument;
  • Pokr Tagh District in Meghri – as a historic urban neighborhood within the city of Meghri.

This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Territorial Development Fund of Armenia and the Tourism Committee of Armenia.
